The Academy

Massanutten Military Academy is the premiere coed college preparatory boarding school, located on a 50-acre campus in Woodstock, VA and 90 minutes from our Nation’s capital. MMA opened in 1899 and is one of five remaining military style boarding schools in Virginia.

Our mission is to prepare cadets for their success by delivering structure and a superior educational experience. Our unique approach involves an environment built on collaboration, critical thinking and innovation. MMA offers college preparatory boarding and day school for cadets in grades 6 through 12, and a 1-year postgraduate (PG) program focused on academics and PG basketball.

The Academy is governed by a 13-member Board of Trustees. The Academy boasts a curriculum that includes advanced placement (AP), dual enrollment, a mandatory science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) program, and upcoming International Baccalaureate Career Program, as well as a mandatory Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) program that is rated as an Honor Unit with Distinction by the U.S. Army Cadet Command. The PG Basketball Team was ranked #1 in the nation at the end of the regular season, the Rifle Team is #1 in the state, and our graduates are routinely accepted to the best colleges and universities in the country averaging over $90,000 each in scholarships.

Position Overview

The Director of Business Operations will work hand in glove with the Head of School to ensure every aspect of the school's operation is in sync to deliver on its promise to its customers. The clients of Massanutten Military Academy are defined as its students and their families. The Director will be responsible for managing all aspects of key administrative functions including the business office, human resources, legal matters, facilities, transportation, food service, vendors, safety, security, information technology, financial management and cost control.

The school's current programs ... Academics, Athletics, JROTC, Fine Arts, Facilities, Boarding and Business Operations are solid and in many cases, exceptional. The school has been limited in achieving its potential growth due to an underutilization of its capacity in a large part, due to the limited market awareness by potential customers. Therefore, the Director of Operations' initial focus will be in the area of the school's primary revenue generators: Enrollment, Development, and Special Events. Marketing, Promotion, Communications that support these activities will also be managed by the Director of Operations. All senior staff responsible for the business aspects of the Academy will report to the Director of Business Operations.

Qualifications

Qualified candidates will be determined on their proven success in Revenue Development and Experience in leveraging positive attributes to appropriate growth.

A minimum of five years of total business management experience, with a minimum of three years’ experience in a business /financial leadership position is required.

Experience in an independent secondary school, college or university setting is preferred, although individuals with strong business leadership skills in a related field are encouraged to explore this opportunity.

Bachelor’s degree required, with a Masters of Business Administration or a Master’s degree in a related field strongly preferred.

Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and major computer software applications (including Blackbaud accounting systems) is also preferred.

MMA is looking for an upper-level history teacher. A degree in history or related field is preferred. The desired individual will be charismatic/ engaging, high energy, adaptive/ flexible, tech savvy (use in the classroom), and willing to collaborate. It is an expectation that this individual will encourage cadets to be critical thinkers and problem solvers and will provide opportunities for cadets to learn through experiences.

About MMA
Massanutten Military Academy is an accredited, non-profit private boarding school located in the Upper Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. The academy is designed to prepare young students with the educational background which will help them advance into college. Built on a military framework, MMA offers the cadets leadership training and experience as well as discipline. In the classroom, MMA continues to advocate for “experiential learning” or learning through doing. Utilizing this philosophy, the academy has built its programs upon the “Project Lead the Way” pathways. We have small class sizes and teachers are provided a level of autonomy with their curriculum since we are not required to participate in SOL testing.

The Guidance Counselor reports to the Academic Dean and the Head of School

Primary Tasks and Responsibilities
    Personal Counseling of Cadets
    • Observe guidelines of professional confidentiality by the American Psychological Association and the American School Counselor’s Association.
    • Attend to new cadets as needed to ensure smooth transitions into MMA classes and routines.
    • Be visible on campus, build relationships with cadets to make it easy for them to seek help.
    • Provide immediate support for cadets in crisis. (Confer with Academic Dean, Commandant and Head of School.)
      • The Counselor, Academic Dean, Commandant, and Nurse determine whether to contact parents regarding behavior that indicates a need for psychologist or physician intervention.
    • Assist the Academic Dean and Commandant in addressing concerns about specific cadets’ conduct, attitude, etc.
      • The Commandant ensures disciplinary justice – fair and proper consequences for misconduct. The Counselor focuses on issues underlying a cadet’s behavior.
    • Assist the Dean in addressing learning issues and behavior/relationships in the classroom.
      • The Dean focuses on instructional improvement, on teachers’ work. The Counselor focuses on, and advocates for, the cadet.
    • Maintain appropriate records and documentation of counseling sessions, actions, etc.
    • Serve as liaison between the school and parents; main point of contact when a cadet has been sent home for medical reasons.

    Support for Student Learning
    • Learning Styles—Coordinate programs and tasks to evaluate individual student learning styles
      • Coordinate ongoing professional development and training in differentiated instruction
      • Assist teachers in addressing students’ individual learning needs
    • Accommodating Diagnosed Learning Differences—Consult with teachers and parents to facilitate and follow up on appropriate accommodations.
    • Study Skills—Coordinate instruction and training in note taking, reading for understanding, etc.
      • Work with students individually and in groups
      • Observe and assist students in their various class settings
    • Parent-Teacher Conferences
      • Schedule/facilitate conferences to discuss learning needs, concerns, strategies, progress.
        Teachers should include the counselor in parent meetings/communications.
    • Tutoring and Extra Help from Teachers
      • Facilitate appropriate peer tutoring and/or extra help from teachers

    Assessment of Learning: Standardized Testing
    • With College Placement Officer, supervise programs to prepare cadets for SAT/ACT.

    Academic Administration: Curriculum and Instruction
    • Assist the Academic Dean in instructional improvement and teachers’ professional development regarding cadet behaviors such as bullying.
    • With the Commandant, Academic Dean, and Head of School, design and implement programs for development of character, morals, and ethics, positive mentoring and peer relationships.
    • Participate as a member of the faculty with class instruction.

    Other Duties as a member of the Academy’s Administrative Staff
    • Participate in faculty meetings, particularly as they relate to academic/curricular matters
    • Serve as a substitute teacher as needed on short notice
    • Attend and support school functions and special events
    • Be involved and visible in the community as an MMA goodwill ambassador
    • Perform duties assigned by the Head of School (consistent with Counselor’s professional status)

Wage Status under the FLSA: Exempt
  • The staff member in this administrative leadership position is compensated on an annual-salary basis and is exempt from overtime-pay provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.

This position requires:
  • You to move through the buildings monitoring cadet behavior throughout the shift.
  • You must be able to mentor cadets while ensuring their adherence to Academy rules.
  • You must be able to complete a small amount of required paperwork and submit it in a timely manner.
  • This position has alternating schedules and includes weekend/evening shifts.

The individual must be willing to work with middle and high school aged students and must have a Bachelor's degree in music or related program from an accredited college or university. Experience working with students is preferred.

Work will include classroom instruction and outside of class activities and practices.

Massanutten Military Academy is looking for a School Bus Driver with a current CDL. This position includes the following responsibilities: performs pre-trip inspection of the school bus; reports operating and equipment deficiencies; cleans bus inside; fuels bus; ensures passenger safety and transports students to special events and field trips, as necessary. Current CDL required.
