Massanutten Military Academy's Alumni Council's mission is to foster positive lifelong relationships among the alumni, former students and friends of the Academy, to act as good ambassadors by supporting the Academy's mission, and to demonstrate with selfless acts the motto of the school Non Nobis Solum (Not For Ourselves Alone).
Alumni Annual Fund Appeal
What a banner year 2016-2017 has been for Massanutten Military Academy! One of our alumni, Frank Mason III ’12, won every major college basketball honor awarded and was named as the College Basketball Player of the Year! The Academy was reviewed and granted full accreditation by the Virginia Association of Independent Schools (VAIS)! Our graduates earned more than an average of $90,000 each to attend college with a 100% college acceptance rate! Our JROTC Academic Bowl Team is once again attending the national competition after scoring the highest in our region! One of our promotional videos won a coveted “Telly Award”! The list goes on!
These successes and many more are made possible in part by the gracious donations made to the academy each year. Tuition revenue covers less than 80% of the operational funds actually needed to deliver our programs. Imagine needing to come up with additional cash to make it more than 2 months each year with no income in your own household or business! That is exactly what it is like for a private school. Could you do it?
The Annual Fund (AF) is what is used to help make up the very real difference between what the academy takes in as tuition and all the operational costs of providing an excellent program. When you donate to MMA via the annual fund you help put fuel in the buses so we can take the cadets on educational field trips and sports outings, you help pay for the utilities to keep our cadets warm and dry, and you help make it possible for them to operate their computers and devices in order to learn. It provides the salaries and benefits of our highly qualified teachers and staff needed to do what we do.
Your donations allow us to offer everything from superior teachers and classes to providing excellent food service in the mess hall. They reflect your commitment to our mission to prepare cadets for their success by delivering a structured and superior educational experience and to our motto: Non Nobis Solum, Not for Ourselves Alone. In short, you help to make us the best value in military boarding school education today!
For those who can and who choose to make a monetary donation, gifts can be made as memorials, towards specific programs/purposes, or remain undesignated which goes directly toward supporting annual operations. Monetary gifts can be made by cash, check, or credit card and via the academy website and are fully tax-deductible.
Donations can also be made as legacy gifts to help support MMA when someone passes and to memorialize a family member. Legacy gifts include donations as part of a will, trust, or making MMA a beneficiary on one’s life insurance policy. This year Mr. Thomas Varden ’47 made such an undesignated gift to the academy in the amount of $50,000 and Mr. Ernest Castillo ’48 left the academy a gift in the amount of $700,000 designated for scholarships for “inner city at risk youth.” Many other donations have been made over the year from parents, alumni, and faculty and staff which have helped us enhance our programs, and we appreciate every effort that has been made by our MMA family.
The dollar amount of what you give is not as important as your action in doing something that helps provide current and future cadets with the best boarding and day school programs possible. I speak for the entire staff and faculty here at MMA when I say that we are extremely appreciative of all our alumni, parents, and others do for us! Whether it is in helping to take cadets to church on Sundays, supplying gift bags to graduating seniors, lecturing a class on their life experiences, or donating to the annual fund we need your help and support. Non Nobis Solum!
