Woodstock, VA (Massanutten Military Academy) - Figuring out the next steps for your life can feel overwhelming. That's why Massanutten Military Academy brought Mrs. Dawn Hawbecker on board; to serve as a guide for our cadets through each possible path for success.
Mrs. Hawbecker is our College & Career Counselor, and also teaches Personal and Professional Skills to our juniors and seniors. For cadets about to graduate, this class gives them time to work one-on-one with her to apply for college and scholarships, build resumes or practice interview skills. When our juniors take her class in the spring, those lessons start a step earlier.
"We will do goal setting, skills and abilities testing, interest surveys, research careers and colleges to get them thinking about what they want to do after MMA and how to accomplish that," Mrs. Hawbecker said.
Along with the lessons she teaches, Mrs. Hawbecker also arranges to have representatives from different colleges and universities visit with our juniors and seniors. That gives the cadets a chance to ask about issues at the top of mind for them, such as class size, SAT and ACT scores and campus life. Already this school year, she's arranged visits from The Citadel,
Virginia Commonwealth University and Longwood University.During her days at MMA, Mrs. Hawbecker said she's built relationships that feel more like family, but she'll always have a special love for campus itself.
"About 3 years ago, my husband and I came to Woodstock to attend a concert at the Shenandoah County Fair," she said. "As we were exploring the area, we drove by MMA, and I thought, 'That’s a cool looking place.'
"The campus is very beautiful," she added. "It is like a little oasis in the middle of town."
While she's proud of her work inside the classroom, she's found that connections with the cadets bloom during nonacademic times.
"Going to Kings Dominion and the Jump Park and seeing the cadets in another environment allows for another side of the relationship to grow," Mrs. Hawbecker said.
For her, the greatest success is at home.
"I have been married to the same wonderful man for 28 years and have 3 incredible children who are all healthy and doing well in life," she said.
Mrs. Hawbecker is part of the incredible team at Massanutten Military Academy who can help your teenager find structure for success in life.
