Woodstock, VA (Massanutten Military Academy) – When you ask 1LT Tipton where her favorite place is on Massanutten Military Academy’s campus, her answer comes quickly: the volleyball court.
“The first time that I ever played volleyball, I thought, ‘This is great, what is this’,” she said. “After that I started watching video after video and watching colleges play online. When I came here, starting off, I was told I had potential and that I was very attentive to what my coach had to say.”
Her commitment is obvious in
every drill, practice and match, especially as she taught herself to jump serve this school year. What started as an emotional outlet has also turned into opportunities.
“I have scholarships to play volleyball in college,” Tipton said. “I feel like here, they look for your potential.”
That’s not the only open door Tipton has found since arriving at MMA. Her GPA was struggling when she first enrolled freshman year, but
she credits our teachers for working with her and making sure she understands the work she submits.
“I went from failing all my classes and having F’s to here, being on all A and A/B,” she said. “With most public schools, if you don’t get it done, it is what it is. Here they try their hardest to give you time to get your work finished.”
Tipton’s presence is easy to spot on campus, serving as the S5 in her senior year and as a representative on our
Cadet Advisory Council. She’s hoping the skills developed at MMA will translate into a career as a Family Childcare Specialist in the military.
“I love everything about spending time with kids,” she said, “from how creative they can be to how interested and fascinated they are by learning things.”
You can see Tipton’s work firsthand on our Facebook page, in a series called “
Through the Lens of a Cadet”. We share photos she captures on and off campus, documenting what it’s like to be enrolled at MMA.
