All cadets at Massanutten Military Academy are enrolled in the Army JROTC Program. Here’s some ways these lessons set your child up for success:

Building a Capacity for Life-Long Learning

JROTC Programs are focused on providing performance-based, learner-centered education. A key part of that curriculum is how it is taught to cadets. They’re enveloped in classrooms with leading-edge technologies that allow their instructors to teach and assess skills through meaningful, purposeful activities. This hands-on, individualized approach allows cadets to evolve and adapt to technology, as well as social and emotional skills. Cadets are also taught to think critically by assessing a problem a problem and strategically designing a solution. These skills encourage cadets to pursue knowledge and never stop evolving, both in their education and career.

Massanutten also provides these lessons through our Summer STAR Program to give your cadet the best chance to get ahead. MMA hosts one of only four Summer JROTC programs in the country approved by U.S. Army Cadet Command.

Communication Skills

One of the core abilities built through a JROTC program is communication using verbal, non-verbal, visual and written techniques. Having an expert grasp on these skills before moving to higher education or the workforce is just another way to put your teenager ahead. They’ll feel comfortable inspiring teams, making critical decisions and clearly delivering messages even under pressure. Massanutten graduates also become expert communicators through active listening, research and writing skills as well as public speaking.

Teaching Integrity and Personal Accountability

One point of the JROTC creed is “I do not lie, cheat or steal and will always be accountable for my actions and deeds.” The best leaders understand that integrity is the bedrock of leadership. Having self-discipline and self-confidence to know when you’ve made a mistake prepares your child for the challenges of adulthood. Openly volunteering information to relevant people provides a level of safety and protection in your relationships across school, work and your personal life. Cadets also learn to follow schedules, adhere to codes of conduct and meet expectations in all aspects.

Building a Portfolio of Accomplishments

The Cadet Portfolio created as part of Leadership, Education and Training (LET) lessons showcases how each student has evolved through the program. It requires proof of how you can lead others to succeed in a diverse and global workforce and succeed in post-secondary options and career paths. They also learn to make decisions that promote positive social, emotional and physical health.  These successes result in promotions in rank and additional leadership responsibilities. Cadets also showcase their victories with ribbons, medals and aiguillettes. These are awarded for participation in JROTC and team activities, personal academic and athletic achievements and leadership.
