Woodstock, VA (Massanutten Military Academy) - 2LT Montgomery-Vielmo knew she was on the path to success when she stepped on campus to begin the 2024-25 school year. Even still, she was surprised to earn the title of Alpha Company Commander before the end of first semester.
"I knew I was on the right track after this summer," she said. "It's been a little bit challenging so far, but I've been doing well because of all the leaders that I have around me. My 1SG and PL's; they've been helping me. Everyone's been very supportive."
Montgomery-Vielmo started coming to MMA for Colonel's Camp, which is
our Summer STAR program designed specifically for younger campers. Our
JROTC program was one of the key reasons she decided to stay with Massanutten.
"I liked the discipline and the structure," she said, "and I also like how there are things you can earn. It gives you a sense of accomplishment."
Her rise through leadership started during this past summer when she worked as a Squad Leader. During the school year,
she earned the rank of SFC before stepping in to her latest role.
"I feel like life is boring without responsibilities and something to work toward; a challenge," she said.
Her work ethic is part of what earned her the honor of Cadet of the Month for December.
"Cadet Montgomery-Vielmo is a hard worker who holds herself and others to high standards," Head of School Mrs. Kimberly Elshafie-Layman said.
Montgomery-Vielmo is already implementing some changes to help support her company, and there are more in the works.
"Alpha leadership is working on some new ideas for when we come back from break," she said.
Outside of her leadership role and classes, Montgomery-Vielmo said she's also learning a lot in the weight room.
"I'm working on deadlifting, which is something I've never done before," she said. "I've learned a lot of new stuff."
