Strengthening Leadership & Discipline through Winter Sports

Woodstock, VA (Massanutten Military Academy) – Competitive sports are key for teenagers to develop discipline, teamwork and leadership. It’s a feature military schools share with traditional public schools to help foster students’ growth and success.

Athletics are one of three key pillars to cadet success at Massanutten Military Academy. Along with Academics and leadership lessons, these competitions help boys and girls develop discipline, grow their self-esteem and hone new skills. All cadets compete in a sport each season, so the benefits continue throughout the school year.

For the winter sports season, cadets chose between basketball, swimming, rifle and weightlifting. We’ve celebrated success, fought to the finish and learned lessons from our tough losses. Some of the highlights include:
  • Our rifle team scoring a decisive victory at home, led by two of our female cadets. They outscored our competition by more than 100 points, and will have three more matches before the Rifle State Match at the end of February.
  • Our swim team diving back into the water for the first time in years. Cadets are more than just treading water, with each choosing a signature stroke to master. Our team has been in action twice this season with another meet  coming up on February 1st.
  • Our boys and girls basketball team are adjusting on the fly and rallying together as a team. They’ve built the foundation for success as they hone their skills with drills, conditioning and practice.
  • Our weightlifting team is preparing for their first match coming up in early February. Cadets are building their mental and physical strength as they dead lift, bench press and squat.
Our spring sports season is just a few months away. Cadets will choose a new sport to find more character-building opportunities that they can apply throughout their careers and lives. We’re looking forward to seeing even more intense action and inspiring moments!
