Welcoming the Year of the Snake
Woodstock, VA (Massanutten Military Academy) - Massanutten Military Academy welcomed in the Year of the Snake on Wednesday, January 29th. Our Chinese New Year celebration included traditional tastes as well as lessons about customs.
Cadets arrived in Cook & Kitchin Dining Hall for Mess II to find it transformed with decorations, and that each table was set so we could enjoy a meal family style. Cadets Mai and Chen started with a presentation, sharing what the celebrations mean to them and turning on a program that families typically watch as part of their celebrations. Then our faculty worked together to serve dishes including green beans and beef, tomato and egg, noodles, spring rolls and dumplings. For dessert, each table got their own bowl of tangyuan to share.
After getting a taste of the culture, our celebration shifted to the traditions. Cadets each had a piece of red paper where they painted the Chinese character for Good Fortune. Then it was time to open red envelopes, which are traditionally passed down by generations with allowance in them.
Thank you to Cadets Mai, Chen and Chen for planning out the celebration. Mrs. Treese, her classes and the amazing staff in Cook & Kitchin Dining Hall were all also instrumental in bringing our celebration to life.
